Cologne, 2 or 3 July 1957

Speaker: ... And then Madame deigned to answer. She said that she had also been in Germany, in Berlin, besides Austria. But she especially liked Cologne.

Callas: I went before to Berlin, and were... er... Germany – no, I went to Austria and Vienna last year. This is the first time, of course, I'm in Cologne, and I'm most enthusiastic.

Speaker: Mrs. Callas even gave information about her private life, albeit briefly. Among other things, an amazing revelation: the best paid singer in the world does not do anything else at home other than forgetting about her career as soon as possible.

Callas: I just lead the usual woman's life, that is my favorite hobby – forgetting I'm a singer and doing whatever... anything else but reminding me of being a singer.

Speaker: Madame even spoke some words in German before leaving, but only to say that, regrettably, she did not speak our language.

Callas: Ich... ich kann nicht spricht deutsch [I cannot speak German] – that's all. Das ist schade [It is a pity] – now, that's all I know. I'm terribly sorry and I'm most embarrassed. I'm afraid I will have to, soon.
