     "...directamente desde la sala del Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires el Himno Nacional cantado por el coro de alumnos del Conservatorio Municipal ‘Manuel de Falla’, bajo la dirección del maestro Héctor Panizza, como número inicial de la Velada de Gala en celebración del centésimo trigésimo tercer aniversario de la Jura de la Independencia. A continuación escucharán obertura y fragmento del primer acto de la ópera Norma de Bellini, cantado con el siguiente reparto: Norma, Maria Callas; Oroveso, Nicolás Rossi-Lemeni, bajo la dirección del maestro Tullio Serafin.
     La antigua Galia (Francia) era objeto de la ambición de los romanos. Establecidos éstos en dicha región, sostuvieron duras luchas hasta dominar el pueblo que defendía su tierra con valor extraordinario. Lucha de guerrillas, se combatía casi constantemente, interrumpiéndose solamente con cortos períodos de tregua. Y es en uno de esos períodos, cuando tiene lugar la acción de Norma. Los sacerdotes druídicos moran en la selva sagrada de Irminsul. Norma, hija de Oroveso, gran sacerdote, ejerce las funciones de gran sacerdotisa del dios cruel y vengativo. Ella es la encargada de revelar los misterios de los signos lunares, que ordenan, a su juicio, la paz o la guerra contra el invasor. Pero Norma está secretamente unida a Pollione, procónsul romano en las Galias. Solamente las sacerdotisas Clotilde y Adalgisa están enteradas de la existencia de los niños. En instantes de comenzar la ópera los galos pretenden tomar nuevamente las armas; pero Norma, temiendo por la suerte del hombre amado anuncia que, previo a todo acto de hostilidad, debe consultar a la diosa auscultando sus palabras y el justo sentido de las mismas; invoca entonces a la luna, que, según ella, ordena la paz. Retíranse los guerreros y sacerdotisas mientras Norma se regocija por haber salvado, una vez más, la vida del hombre que ama.
     La célebre romanza ‘Casta diva’ que entona Norma al invocar a la luna está considerada la más bella de la lírica italiana, al punto que estando Ricardo Wagner en Venecia, y con tal motivo fuera homenajeado, eligió para su noche de honor a Norma, rindiendo así, a su vez, homenaje a la que consideraba la más acabada [obra] maestra de la inspiración de la música italiana."

     "…directly from the auditorium of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the National Hymn was sung by the chorus of students from the Municipal Conservatory ‘Manuel de Falla’ under the direction of Maestro Héctor Panizza as the first number initiating the Gala Soirée commemorating the 133rd Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Next you will hear the overture and an excerpt from Act I of Bellini’s Norma sung by the following cast: Norma, Maria Callas; Oroveso, Nicola Rossi-Lemeni; under the baton of Maestro Tullio Serafin.
     Ancient Gaul in France was the political objective of the Romans, who had established themselves in that region and engaged in long struggles to dominate the people who defended their territory with extraordinary valor. Warriors from both sides were almost constantly involved in combat, interrupted only by brief periods of truce. It was during one of these periods that the action of Norma takes place. The sacred Druids dwelled in the holy forest of Irminsul. Norma, daughter of Oroveso, the high priest, exercised her duties as priestess of the cruel and vindictive gods. She was charged with revealing the mysteries of the moon that ordained, according to her judgement, periods of war or peace with the invaders. However, Norma is secretly united with Pollione, Roman proconsul in Gaul. Only the priestesses Clotilde and Adalgisa know about the existence of the children. As the opera begins, the Gauls are about to take up arms again, but Norma, fearing for the life of her lover, announces that she must consult the Gods before hostilities commence and interpret the meaning of their words. She then invokes the moon which, according to Norma, ordains peace. Warriors and priestesses withdraw, while Norma rejoices in having saved, once again, the life of the man she loves.
     The celebrated aria ‘Casta diva’ intoned by Norma while invoking the moon is considered the most beautiful in Italian music; so much so, that when Richard Wagner was to be honored in Venice, he chose Norma for his night of honor, surrendering in turn homage to what he considered a great masterpiece of inspiration in Italian music."
